What to Bring for Beautiful Wedding-Day Photos

Your wedding day is filled with tiny details that tell your story—from the invitation you spent weeks choosing to the perfume you wear as you walk down the aisle. One of my favorite ways to preserve those details is with a wedding flat lay. 

A flat lay is a styled photograph of your wedding-day details arranged together to create one beautiful, cohesive image. The best part? You don't have to have a huge collection of details. A few meaningful pieces can create something gorgeous. 

Your Paper Details

Your invitation is usually the star of the flat lay, so if possible, bring:

  • Wedding invitation

  • Save-the-date

  • RSVP card

  • Details card

  • Ceremony program

  • Menu

  • Reception stationery

  • Thank-you cards

  • Envelope

  • Envelope liner

  • Wax seals

  • Custom stamps

  • Ribbon, vellum or other invitation embellishments

Pro tip: Bring a few extra envelopes—especially the envelope with your names and address on it. Those little details photograph beautifully!

The Rings

Of course, we need the rings!

Bring:

  • Engagement ring

  • Wedding bands

  • Ring box

  • Ring dish

  • Ring holder

  • Any meaningful jewelry

If you have a beautiful ring box or personalized ring dish, definitely bring it. These can become gorgeous little details within the flat lay.


Bridal Details

This is where your personality can really come through.

Consider bringing:

  • Wedding shoes

  • Veil

  • Hair accessories

  • Earrings

  • Necklace

  • Bracelet

  • Garter

  • Bridal perfume

  • Lipstick or other beauty products

  • Bouquet ribbon

  • Something old

  • Something new

  • Something borrowed

  • Something blue

And don't forget those little luxury details—your favorite perfume bottle, a beautiful pair of earrings, or the shoes you've been dreaming about wearing all year.

Groom's Details

Grooms, I promise you get a flat lay, too. 😉

Some great details include:

  • Tie or bow tie

  • Cufflinks

  • Watch

  • Wedding-day cologne

  • Shoes

  • Pocket square

  • Boutonniere

  • Tie clip

  • Belt

  • Socks

  • Personalized accessories

  • Family heirlooms

A watch, cufflinks, cologne and invitation suite can make an incredibly masculine and sophisticated flat lay.

Florals & Natural Elements

If your florist is able to provide a few extra blooms or greenery, these can take your flat lay to another level.

Consider:

  • Loose flowers

  • Greenery

  • Bouquet ribbon

  • Dried flowers

  • Florals from your ceremony or reception

Your photographer can use these pieces to pull your wedding colors into the entire composition.

The Little Things That Make It Yours

This is my favorite category because there are no rules.

Think about the things that represent your relationship:

  • Handwritten love notes

  • Photos

  • Heirlooms

  • Family jewelry

  • Personalized items

  • Vow books

  • Cocktail napkins

  • Custom matchbooks

  • Wedding favors

  • Meaningful trinkets

  • A special book

  • Tickets from a memorable date or trip

  • Anything sentimental to the two of you

Your flat lay doesn't need to look like everyone else's on Pinterest. It should look like you.

The Easiest Wedding-Day Tip: Create a Detail Box

Here's my biggest recommendation for brides:

Put all of your flat-lay details together in one box before your wedding day.

Instead of your photographer having to hunt down the rings, invitations, shoes and perfume while you're getting ready, everything can be waiting in one place.

Give that box to me when I arrive, and I can take it from there.

And don't worry if you don't have every item on this list. You don't need to go shopping just for a flat lay. Your wedding details already tell your story—we're simply putting them together in a beautiful way.

✨ One Last Thing

Your wedding day goes by incredibly fast. The invitation eventually gets thrown away. The flowers dry out. The perfume bottle gets put back on your dresser. The shoes go back in your closet.

But your photographs allow you to remember all of those little things you carefully chose.

That's why I love creating flat lays. They're more than pretty pictures—they're a little time capsule of the details that made your wedding day uniquely yours.
